Across Moroccan territories, architecture has historically evolved through repair, adaptation and material intelligence. Today, many of these situated practices are weakened by imported building systems that are detached from place. This programme grows out of this tension, asking how architectural repair can rethink contemporary design without separating form, use and context. It positions architecture as a practice of continuity and shared authorship.
The programme unfolds across two territories. It takes place in the Al Haouz region of the Atlas Mountains, where the impact of an earthquake in 2023 has brought renewed attention to earth construction and post-seismic repair. Visiting the village of Marigha, participants will work with local artisans through field surveys, hands-on workshops and experimentation focused on stone, earth and lime. These activities will be complemented by lectures and open discussions, bringing together local and international practitioners. Research and making are closely aligned and will inform a speculative adaptive reuse design exercise.
The programme concludes at the UM6P campus near Marrakesh, where participants are introduced to seismic architecture and vernacular resilience, designed to resist the impact of earthquakes. The visit to UM6P will include a jury, symposium and public exhibition – an opportunity for forging dialogue with the local community and visitors. Drawings, experiments and physical models will be produced collectively, documenting construction techniques, repair strategies and spatial adaptations.
Rim Cherkaoui (Programme Head) is an architectural designer, working across architecture and anthropology to explore the negotiation between knowledge and memory. She completed a residency with the African Futures Institute that examined African spatial identities and alternative models of architectural practice. She also works with architectural heritage association, MAMMA, on archive documentation. An AA alum, Rim received the Architectural Professional Practice Prize for her proposal on pedagogy, heritage and cultural engagement across Morocco and the UK.
Khalil Morad El Ghilali (Institutional & Community Liaison and Tutor) is an architect, urban planner, researcher and founder of Atelier BE. His practice engages local resources and vernacular construction techniques across Moroccan territories. He teaches in Marrakech at the UM6P SAPD and the National School of Architecture, and his research focuses on ecology, materiality and fieldwork. Khalil is currently involved in post-seismic construction projects in Al Haouz. He co-curated the Moroccan Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025.
Mika Sautet (Tutor) is an architect trained at ENSA Montpellier and ENSA La Réunion. After working in Marseille and completing her HMONP, she undertook training with Le Gabion, gaining expertise in raw earth, straw and lime eco-construction. Mika's practice now focuses on eco-renovation and low-impact construction across France through close collaboration with artisans and locally sourced materials.
The programme is open to architecture students and graduates, as well as young professionals interested in material practices, territorial analysis and context-driven design. Applicants from related fields such as landscape, urban studies and spatial research are also welcome.
Some hands-on experience (e.g. construction, fabrication or material experimentation) is expected, as well as a genuine interest in vernacular knowledge and situated practice. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite is preferred for documentation and presentations. Experience with 3D modelling software such as Rhino or SketchUp is preferred.
If you are a student at UM6P University, please upload proof of enrolment via the ‘Scholarship’ link in the registration form. After acceptance, you will receive a payment link via email.
