An award-winning documentary about AA alum, the architect Ada Karmi Melamede will be screening in London in April and May. Ada studied at the AA in the late 1950s – one of only a handful of women in her cohort. Her brother, Ram Karmi, was also an AA alum. They went on to shape some of Israel's most significant civic architecture over the past fifty years. Now, Ada is the subject of a documentary directed by her daughter, filmmaker and former architect, Yael Melamede. First released in 2024, Ada: My Mother the Architect is a deeply moving portrait of a pioneering woman who navigated impossible tensions between professional ambition, motherhood and a lifelong commitment to architecture as a public good. The film raises questions that will resonate with every architect: What does it mean to build with ideals? What is lost when one's profession and country are changing beyond recognition?
Screenings of Ada: My Mother the Architect followed by a Q&A with the director will take place at JW3 on 29 April, 7:30pm and at Ciné Lumière, Institut Français, on 1 May, 6:15pm. Additional screenings of the film will take place at JW3 and Ciné Lumière until 10 May.
