Visiting School Fiskars 2024, photos by Max Creasy. This workshop is situated in the post-industrial ironworks village of Fiskars, Finland, and investigates material and ecological resilience alongside cultural and legal forms of belonging. This summer, we continue to design and build within the existing Fiskars foundry building Valimo, adapting this historic structure to speculate on uses that are seasonal or mobile. The workshop slowly invents architecture for a post-industrial landscape that is shifting from extraction to care and maintenance. The workshop integrates design research, full-scale prototyping and collaborative making. Proposals merge craft, furniture design and architecture emphasising material intelligence and construction as forms of inquiry.
Participants will work together with local carpenters at the foundry managed by Nikari, a leading wood design studio and furniture manufacturer that has collaborated with masters of Finnish architecture including Alvar Aalto. Local collaborations and visits to woodworking workshops offer participants direct exposure to advanced woodworking techniques and local material cultures.
Originally established in 1649, the Fiskars ironworks shifted its production of everyday tools out of the village several decades ago. The vacant industrial spaces have been transformed into homes for a vibrant artists’ cooperative. The Fiskars Village Works leverages this rich cultural and craft heritage, offering students the chance to learn techniques from local experts.
