AA Visiting School Rio de Janeiro Programme Head Roberto Boettger has published an essay titled ‘Between Hunch and Abstraction’ in the academic journal CriticAll. Boettger reflects on drawings produced during the AAVS Rio 2024 summer course:
‘Often, the method by which we deploy the tools commonly associated with producing architecture, such as drawing, loosely falls under two categories: one does it and then thinks about it, or one thinks about it and then does it. The first case is about tangibility, effect, hunch, and immediacy. The second case is about abstraction, measurability, awareness, and mediation. The risk to the first is to overdo and to the second is to overthink. Each architect secretly finds better comfort in one of the two, even if seasonally.’
CriticAll is published by Polytechnic University of Madrid (ETSAM-UPM).
