Research Programme
MPhil/PhD programme

The Design Research Lab (AADRL), the AA’s innovative team-based course in experimental architecture and urbanism, offers a Masters (MArch). In autumn 2009 the AA launches a new full-time graduate programme Design + Make, that leads to an AA Graduate Diploma. The 16-month, site- and workshop-based programme for the design and construction of small-scale, sustainable prototype buildings in rural settings is located in Dorset at the AA’s Hooke Park estate, a working forest in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The AA Interprofessional Studio (AAIS), launched in January 2009, invites professionals from diverse creative disciplines to work and study within the AA on projects of various kinds and scales. AAIS offers a full-time course leading to the award of an AA Graduate Diploma and a part-time programme that awards an AA Interprofessional Certificate and allows students to continue to practise. Emergent Technologies & Design (MArch/MSc) emphasises forms of architectural design that proceed from innovative technologies. Sustainable Environmental Design (MArch/MSc) introduces new forms of architectural practice and design related to the environment and sustainability. Landscape Urbanism (MA) investigates the processes, techniques and knowledge related to the practices of contemporary urbanism. Housing & Urbanism (MA) rethinks urbanism as a spatial discipline through a combination of design projects and contemporary theory. Histories & Theories (MA) encourages a critical understanding of contemporary architecture and urban culture grounded in a knowledge of histories and forms of practice. The part-time Building Conservation course offers a two-year programme leading to an AA Graduate Diploma.

Complementing these Masters programmes, the AA PhD programme fosters advanced scholarship and innovative research in the fields of architecture and urbanism through full-time doctoral studies. In 2009/10 the school will launch a new PhD by Design programme, providing a setting for advanced research and learning for architects, designers and other qualified professionals.

All graduate degrees at the AA are validated by the Open University.
