FORMAT Issue 5
Career FORMAT 2: Irma Boom & Hans Ulrich Obrist
Date: Wednesday 15 July 2015
Venue: New Soft Room
FORMAT is a ‘live magazine’ looking at the shapes that discourse and knowledge takes.
Issue 5 believes that seen from a particular vantage point, careers are design projects or artworks. They have shape, narrativity, poetic predestination and also serendipitous failure built into their wiring. Guests are asked to present Career Formats that have mattered to them in shaping what they do, in the worlds of art, architecture, curating, graphic design, literature, performance, popular culture and more.
Irma Boom and Hans Ulrich Obrist will present the Career Formats of graphic designer Jan Vermeulen, artist Daan van Golden, curator/art historian Lucy Lippard and artist/poet Etel Adnan.
Hans Ulrich Obrist is co-director of exhibitions and programmes and director of international projects at Serpentine Galleries, London. He has curated over 300 exhibitions and conducted over 2500 hours of interviews. His latest books are Lives of the Artists, Lives of the Architects and Ways of Curating, both published by Penguin.
Irma Boom is widely recognized as one of the world’s foremost book designers, and is the youngest person ever to receive the prestigious Gutenberg Prize for a body of work. Irma has made over 300 books, 100 of which are in the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York. Clients include the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Chanel, the Museum of Modern Art, Prince Claus Fund, Vitra International, the United Nations, and OMA/Rem Koolhaas.
All lectures are open to members of the public, staff and students unless otherwise stated.
