Friday 28 – Sunday 30 September 2018

AAVS Richelieu is calling for expressions of interest to take part in a long term project on the exceptional historical site of the town of Richelieu in France.

The project is run in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery as part of a Sculpture Biennale involving international artists.

The town was built in 1631-1642 by Cardinal Richelieu, a prominent state figure of the 17th century and fervent proponent of the Arts and Architecture. Cardinal Richelieu set out to create an ideal city in his homeland near the Loire Valley and hired architect Jacques Lemercier, who had designed the Sorbonne and the Palais Royal in Paris. Together they built an impressive castle, as well as designed the plans of an entire city. The castle has long gone but what remains is a perfectly rectangular town ruled by geometrical laws and a garden envisaged as the site of the future Biennale.

The inaugural Richelieu Biennale will take place in July-August 2019 and will draw from the site’s history, nature and culture, with reference to the Fables de La Fontaine.

AAVS Richelieu is looking for a small group of motivated individuals to research the past and speculate for the future. Applications are open to current and former AA students interested in the intersections and interstices between Art, Architecture and Literature.

The first phase of the project will include a site visit (28-30 September 2018) and subsequent meetings and workshops in London.

To register your interest please email a cover letter with your CV and any work examples you deem relevant to before 1st July 2018.

The AA Visiting School Richelieu is free for AA students and former AA students. The Visiting School will contribute towards travels costs for successful applicants. A minimal financial participation might be required towards food and accommodation.
