Self-build Holiday Home Package Holiday

Monday 21 – Friday 25 May 2018

Descriptive Text / Agenda

The holiday is a break from your mundane. For the city dweller who has limited agency over their own built environment, building your own dwelling can be an act of holidaying.
On this package holiday, you will learn skills and gain confidence to self-build a holiday home. To that end, a practice holiday home will be built through an improvisational means of design through make. The holiday home will grow as it is built and each step will be a response to previous decisions and fabrications. This will establish an improvisational strategy and approach towards the self-building of a holiday home. Through this, an aesthetic style we understand to be an aesthetic of making-do will develop.
At the end of the package holiday, part of a holiday home will have been constructed. This holiday home is understood to be an ongoing project, something for you to return to on future weekends, bank holidays and annual leave.
Thus building a holiday home can become an act of holidaying as was prominent in the Plotland developments of the 80’s such as Peacehaven and Basildon.
