Advanced Bamboo Design and Construction 1

Monday 27 July – Saturday 8 August 2020

We need to look at new sustainable, locally available natural materials for construction, and we will need to respond to this challenge and develop new processes to work with natural materials which ensure structural integrity and affordability. In order to reduce the cost of design, we can develop a greater synthesis between our current computational design process and materials with natural variability such as bamboo. Computational design tools allow us to visualise ideas, modify and analyse these interactively, though this modification can still be time consuming. Parametric software allows us to build on this process and specify relationships among parameters and instantly output versions or iterations of a design.

In this first part of the Advanced Bamboo Design and Construction programme we will design a community scale structure and we will make material considerations the fundamental step in our design methodology. We will use initial bamboo physical models and take this into the computer in which we will test our digital models alongside 1:1 scale bamboo prototypes of joints systems we construct which will then inform and improve the buildability and durability of a design output to be constructed later in the year in Bandung. We will learn bamboo harvesting, treatments and learn about locally available species of bamboo in Bandung and the constraints and opportunities this presents for design and construction with full-culm bamboo. We will learn bamboo construction principles firsthand in the workshop, so we as designers can embed the practicalities of bamboo into the design portfolio and widen the boundaries of the design solution space of bamboo architecture. If we can develop greater syntheses between the digital and naturally variably, as designers we can obtain tools which can increase the use of renewable natural materials with variability such as bamboo, and begin to propose new applications for sustainable natural materials.

2) Once you complete the online application and make a full payment, you are registered onto the programme. Please note that a deposit payment holds your place on the course but does not confirm it. A CV or a portfolio is not required.

The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates and young professionals. Software Requirements: Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino 6, Grasshopper (relevant GH plug in’s will be advised in the extended brief)

Fees

The AA Visiting School requires a fee of £695 per participant, which includes a £60 Visiting Membership fee, payable by all participants.

Fees do not include flights or accommodation, but accommodation options can be advised. Students need to bring their own laptops, digital equipment and model making tools.

Visas

All participants travelling from abroad are responsible for securing any visa required, and are advised to contact their home embassy early. After full payment of course fees, the AA School can provide a letter confirming participation in the workshop.

Insurance

All participants are responsible for securing their own travel and health insurance. Please ensure that your travel insurance also covers your personal belongings i.e. laptop, equipment, tools, passport etc. The AA takes no responsibility for lost/ stolen property.

Biographies

Dr.-Ing. Andry Widyowijatnoko is an Architect, Lecturer and Researcher in ITB, Indonesia. He started working with bamboo in 1999 in developing plastered bamboo construction. After studying bamboo architecture in Colombia, he changed his approach of promoting bamboo by designing high-end building to increase its value. One of his achievements in design was award winning Great Hall OBI. He gained his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Architecture, RWTH Aachen, Germany in 2012, with dissertation ‘Traditional and Innovative Joints in Bamboo Construction’. He is now focusing on advanced applications of bamboo such as tensegrity structure, reciprocal frame, tensile structure as well as space structure.

John Osmond Naylor is an architect at Grimshaw in London, and PhD researcher at Newcastle University. He completed his AA Diploma at the Architectural Association in 2013, winning the Holloway Prize, the Fosters Prize for Sustainable Infrastructure, and was featured in Dezeen top 10 bamboo projects 2014. John has worked at MAD, Beijing, rare Architects in Paris, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design, on complex projects in the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Haiti. John’s ongoing research looks at how architects can advance full-culm bamboo as a material to provide adequate and sustainable urban housing to achieve the UN SDG 11 by 2030.

THE AA RECEIVES THE POWER TO AWARD ITS OWN DEGREES

The Architectural Association receives Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Lords of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council.

The Architectural Association (AA), the oldest independent school of architecture in the United Kingdom, is pleased to announce that it has been granted the power to award its own degrees. As of 1 October 2019, the AA has the right to establish new academic programmes and degree awards and is working to create some of the world’s most pioneering courses in architecture to shape and build the future.

Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) give UK higher education institutions the right to award bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Prospective students worldwide can apply to the AA Foundation Course (Foundation Diploma), Experimental Programme BA(Hons), Diploma Programme (MArch), and nine taught postgraduate programmes encompassing History and Critical Thinking in Architecture (MA), Projective Cities (Taught MPhil) and Sustainable Environmental Design (MSc/MArch), amongst others.

AA Director, Eva Franch said, ‘since our founding in 1847 we have never ceased to create new horizons, institutionally and academically. This is a significant milestone for the AA and demonstrates how we have grown and progressed as an institution that has always valued independence. Receiving TDAP marks a new era for our institution; these are exciting times for the AA. The process has required considerable work from all members of staff and students. I would like to take this opportunity to credit them for this major achievement’.

President of the AA Council, Victoria Thornton added, ‘the TDAP process has recognised our strong governance, academic standards, scholarship and teaching as well as the environment supporting the delivery of taught higher education programmes’.

The School’s application for Taught Degree Awarding Powers was supported by the Architects Registration Board, the Royal Institute of British Architects and The Open University.
