Work on the thesis begins
in the Spring/Summer terms of the first year. The student's brief
is to produce a piece of writing of about 15,000 words that is an
original piece of work and that critically examines source material
relevant to an aspect of the conservation of historic buildings. The
date for submission of theses is generally the last Friday in May
in the second year. They are examined by the thesis tutor and an external
examiner, and orals are held for each student towards the end of the
summer term.
Topics chosen for the thesis have to be approved by the thesis
tutor and the Course Director. They may cover historical, technical,
aesthetic, philosophical, legal or policy issues. The subject may
also be one relating to conservation in a foreign country if justified.
To get an idea of the kind of topics covered in the past, go to the
aaschool Library website
click thesis search; then write in building conservation as the course (this will give you a list of all past theses); then you
can click limit search and search under subject.
