The AA San Juan Visiting School, Play with Your Food, in collaboration with Universidad de Puerto Rico, Escuela de Arquitectura will aim to bridge the gap between the fields of Architecture and Contemporary Gastronomy in a highly specific and uniquely, localized manner. The school will strive to associate their similarities and differences, in order to discover intrinsic characteristics and establish relationships between the two, whilst also attempting to feed and grow the knowledge base, design approach, and thought processes of both fields in a very experimental yet practical manner.

Prominent Features of the workshop/ skills developed

The workshop will feature a lecture series a team based teaching approach / First-rate Facilities / Development of Computational skills and 3D modelling techniques / brief theoretical background based on architecture, design and molecular gastronomy / Fabrication / trips around the island/ along with tutorials in architecture and cooking from our directors as well as prominent culinary professionals from all over Puerto Rico.


1) You can make an application by completing the online application found under ‘Links and Downloads’ on the AA Visiting School page. If you are not able to make an online application, email visitingschool@aaschool.ac.uk for instructions to pay by bank transfer.
2) Once you complete the online application and make a full payment, you are registered to the programme. A CV or a portfolio is not required.
The deadline for applications is: 1 July, 2017.
All participants travelling from abroad are responsible for securing any visa required, and are advised to contact their home embassy early. After payment of fees, the AA School can provide a letter confirming participation in the workshop.

The AA Visiting School requires a fee of £695 per participant, which includes a £60 visiting membership fee. If you are already a member, the total fee will be reduced by £60 by the online payment system. There will be a 20% discount in fees for AA students and UPR students alike.
Fees do not include flights or accommodation, but accommodation options can be advised. Students need to bring their own laptops, digital equipment and model making tools. Please ensure this equipment is covered by your own insurance as the AA takes no responsibility for items lost or stolen at the workshop.


The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, phd candidates and young professionals. Software Requirements: Basic Maya, Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino (SR7 or later) and Basic CAD/CAM Skills are encouraged, but not required.

Programme Heads Biography

Drew Merkle works at Zaha Hadid Architects in London, UK. He has experience working on projects of any scale in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. He holds an M.Arch from the DRL at the Architectural Association in London, and a B.Arch from Auburn University in the USA. In 2012 he co-founded mEmE a contemporary atelier for the re-search and re-thinking of advanced design and geometry in architecture.

Jorge Méndez-Cáceres currently works at Jump Studios, previously at Heatherwick Studio and Zaha Hadid Architects. His academic experience include Masters in Architecture from the DRL at the Architectural Association in London and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York; and a B.Env Des from the School of Architecture at the Universidad de Puerto Rico. He co-founded mEmE in 2012 a contemporary atelier for the re-search and re-thinking of advanced design and geometry in architecture.
